Capturing Carbon and Building New Nuclear

This month’s article continues our review of the UK Government’s recent Energy Review. There are two main objectives that the UK Government has identified as being significant in future power generation; one being security of supply and the other being reducing carbon output. Last month we took a look at the carbon market and the effect the UK is having on total Global Emissions and what the UK plans to do about it in conjunction with Europe and the EU ETS. We explored distributed energy and the effect that could have on communities, as well as Oil, Gas and Coal and how they make up the UK energy mix.

This month we continue our theme and explore new technology in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as well as new nuclear build, as outlined in the UK Energy Review 2006.

mWELCOME

Hello and welcome to the September issue of MZINE, our free monthly e-newsletter.

We finish our look at the UK 2006 Energy Review this month see MSTORY for our main article. MPRICES  looks at the spot Oil Forward Curve, whilst at MPHASIS Derek has discovered a shop that holds all the answers for microgeneration! Don't forget to check out our thought of the month at MPATHY.

At MTRAIN I have listed all of our scheduled 2006 training dates to help you plan for the rest of this year. As always, all of our courses are kept up-to-date with the latest information and there are still spaces available. So if you are new to the Energy Industry, or need to brush up on some of those old skills, or need to know just what to do with your carbon allowances (and I don't mean bury them!) why not give us a call?

THE FORWARD CURVE

Slower economic growth, rising crude supplies, impending refinery turnarounds and the end of the gasoline season have taken some of the heat out of the oil market. The front end of the WTI forward curve fell sharply, extending the contango out to twelve months ahead. Gasoline crack spreads fell sharply as the market turned its attention to middle distillates with winter approaching. However, heating oil crack spreads remain firm and are expected to widen.

A shortage of refinery upgrading capacity continues to support high margins. Demand for transport fuels is still growing, but residual fuel oil is in decline – adding to the pressure on upgrading capacity as surplus fuel oil competes with crude as a refinery feedstock. Calendar 2007 WTI eased to $75.3/bbl – equivalent to $74.5/bbl for Brent or just under $70/bbl for the new OPEC basket of crudes.

mPATHY
thought of the month

I have studied many times
The marble which was chiseled for me-
A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbour.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.

For love was offered me, and I shrank from its disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid
Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.
Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life
And now I know that we must lift the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.

To put meaning in one's life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is the torture
Of restlessness and vague desire-
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.

Study probes greener EU energy futures

Combined efforts for greater energy efficiency and more renewables would best achieve the EU’s goals of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and foreign energy dependence, according to European commission predictions.

According to a study released last week, under this scenario, Europe could hold CO2 emissions below 1990 levels from 2010 onwards, while bringing overall energy demand back below its 1990 level by 2030.

EU dependence on fossil fuel imports would be limited to 59% compared with 65% under a baseline scenario assuming incomplete implementation of laws on renewable electricity and biofuels.

Under a scenario of strong energy efficiency measures without a big push on renewables energy demand would fall, but by less. Carbon intensity would decline only slightly, while Europe’s dependence on energy imports would increase.

In contrast, promoting renewables without improving energy efficiency much would produce significant improvement in carbon intensity and a lower dependence on imports but do little to rein in energy demand.
