The National Grid Final Winter Consultation Report 2007/8

The National Grid winter consultation report written in conjunction with Ofgem represents national grids third and final draft in the process of presenting the outlook of supply and demand balance for the UK gas and electricity markets for the winter of 2007/8. This September update aims to bring together National Grids final view for the winter 07/08 outlook, reflecting upon specific points raised and further analysing the June publication. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a brief overview of the report focussing largely on the gas issues raised.

Understanding the physical and commercial realities of LNG

The market for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is rapidly expanding as falling production costs and rising gas demand drive new production and reception projects. The first LNG deliveries to the UK for twenty years began in 2005, while some forecasts see LNG meeting up to 20% of UK gas demand in the next decade. Elsewhere in Europe new terminals are being developed and existing ones expanded to meet a rush in LNG supply, while major LNG production projects are developing in every continent.

24th October Network Code Aberdeen & 22nd November London
Understanding gas transportation in Britain.

For more than a decade, the Network Code has been the cornerstone of the successful competitive gas market in Britain , and has become a model for the creation of third party access regimes in many other liberalising markets. The sale of four distribution networks by NationalGridTransco in 2005 has transformed the contractual structure of the industry with the creation of the Uniform Network Code and short-form Codes for each transporter. The Network Code course provides a clear overview of the new UNC regime, and explains the principles underlying gas transportation in Britain .

The Network Code course is an essential introduction to the contractual framework of the UK gas market, and enables delegates to understand the concepts and practicalities of gas market operations in Britain .

20th November UK Electricity Markets London

The UK electricity market has been through dramatic change over recent years with full market liberalisation in 1999, the New Electricity Trading Arrangements in 2001, price crashes, consolidation and warnings over plant margin in 2001 to 2003, and rebounding prices in 2004. 2005 has seen the implementation of BETTA – the creation of an integrated Great Britain trading and transmission system, as well as the impact of the emissions trading, record prices, and rumours of planned investments in new nuclear power.
