Network Code Introduction course review

On the 1st May 2005 a dramatic shift occurred in the UK gas transportation industry as Great Britain moved from a single main transporter to a multi-transporter regime. The Network Code was replaced by the Uniform Network Code and a Short Form Codes from each of the new network operators. On 1st June 2005 the sale of four of Transco’s distribution networks was completed. The Energy Training Network’s Network Code Introduction one-day seminar has been fully updated to provide an overview of the new regime, with explanation of how it all works together to create a transportation framework for gas in Britain .

The course starts by covering the concept of the Network Code and the structure of the UNC and Short Form Codes now supporting the multi-transporter environment. Key aspects of the regime are then examined in detail, including entry capacity, exit capacity, and balancing and system security. The modification process - which has changed somewhat following the transfer of responsibility for change management to the Joint Office of Gas Transporters - is explained and key developments highlighted. The final lecture covers a range of subjects relevant to the interface with customers, including Supply Point Administration, transportation charging, and meters.

Presented by Nick White, an expert on the Network Code and author of a number of books on the UK gas market, including Network 2000: the New Gas Trading Arrangements and The Long-Term Capacity Auctions: a review of the UK gas entry capacity regime, the Network Code seminar is a great introduction to the practicalities of operating in the UK gas market.
