EU gas markets course

In 1998 the EU launched a hugely ambitious plan to liberalise gas markets across all EU states. Following EU enlargement and the accelerated energy directive in 2003, there should now be full competition to all non-domestic customers in most EU states, with full competition to almost 100m domestic customers required by July 2007. The principles may be in place for market liberalisation, but the actual state of competition on the ground is very varied across the EU. ETN’s EU gas markets course provides a vital overview of the theory and practice of competition across the major markets of Europe and is an essential tool for understanding the evolving European gas market.

Held over two days in Templeton College , Oxford , the course starts with an overview of major drivers in European gas, including supply and demand, infrastructure, and the changing political and regulatory framework for the gas industry. Further lectures provide analysis of key European markets such as Germany , UK , France , Italy , Netherlands and Spain , with summaries of smaller markets. Topics such as transportation access and gas trading are covered in detail, with analysis of emerging gas trading hubs, and the impact of changing dynamics such as emissions trading, increasing import dependency, and LNG trading and price arbitrage. The major European gas players are described, and strategies analysed. Finally the course ends ETN’s very popular gas trading game, which introduces delegates to the challenges and opportunities of operating in a liberalised gas market.

The EU gas markets two-day seminar is an ideal overview of the current realities, and future possibilities, of gas in Europe
