Over the last few months we have looked at the Emissions Trading Scheme, at how effective it will be at reducing our Co2 emissions and how that will help the environment. We also considered (last month) nuclear power generation as one way of producing cleaner electricity. As a continuation to this theme, let’s take a look at other forms of power generation, and see what is on offer.  

As part of on-going agreements to reduce Co2 emissions and the overall greenhouse effect, the European Commission has set targets for members to produce cleaner power using renewable power generation. Many European countries are striving towards 12% renewable energy by 2010, while the UK hopes to produce 10% of its power demand also by 2010.

Course Review

UK Gas Market Introduction course review 

The Energy Training Network launched its first public training course under its own name on 9^th July 2003. After many years of training delegates in-house and speaking at public courses run by other companies the Energy Training Network decided to present The UK Gas Market Introduction to the world and met with resounding success.  

Being new to the energy industry myself, I was privileged to be present on that momentous day. Fifteen delegates joined me from companies such as Centrica, Interconnector, UKOOA, BHP Billiton and BG Group, to name but a few and we went through six excellent slide presentations, being able to make notes in our colour course books on the relevant slides and have a copy of the slides saved for us on an accompanying CD.

Forward Gas Curve

2005 has seen a large increase in gas prices in both the UK and Europe, as gas supplies have dropped and the UK once again became a net importer of gas. The graphs show how much difference that has made to the UK and Europe in the last twelve months as we compare like for like.

The summer months of 2005  has seen an increase of around 12p/th on day-ahead and within-day prices, whilst the winter months are now selling for nearly double the price of the previous year.

And finally - Queen extends her power base  

Britain ’s royal family is to power its humble abode of Windsor Castle with its own hydropower plant. A third of the castle’s electricity is to be provided by a £1 million, four turbine 200 kW hydropower plant, which Windsor and Maidenhead council has given permission to build, reports say. The plant will be built at Romney Weir on the River Thames by npower Renewables. A feasibility study is to be carried out and building to begin in 2006, with commissioning by end-of 2006. RT
